Unlike childhood and adulthood, puberty is a different and special period during which lots of developmental constituents are gained. During this period, the incidence of psychological problems is high. While it is frequent for the adolescent girls to experience inner directed behavioural problems such as anxiety and depression and problems with social relations (with parents, friends and school), it is frequent for adolescent boys to experience problems with school and work and outer directed behavioural problems in the form of anti-social and violent behaviours (lack of attention-hyperactivity disorder, objection disorder, conduct disorder). Family physicians are likely to come across adolescents with mental health problems frequently. But it is not actually explicit how these problems could be recognized and handled by the family physicians and when, how and to whom they will be directed. Therefore, family physicians need first of all to be aware of the mental problems and then to get standardized trainings to increase their diagnostic skills. Our aim in this study is to deal with frequently encountered mental symptoms and disorders, to stress upon the points to which attention should be paid while interviewing the adolescents, and to inform them about what could be done.

Ergenlik dönemi gelişimsel birçok yapı taşının kazanıldığı, çocukluk ve erişkinlik dönemlerinden ayrı, farklı ve özel bir dönemdir. Bu dönemde ruhsal sorunların görülme sıklığı da yüksektir. Kız ergenlerde anksiyete ve depresyon gibi içe yönelimli davranış sorunları ve sosyal ilişkilerde (ebeveynler, arkadaşlar ve okul) sorunlar, erkek ergenlerde ise okulda ve işte sorunlar, antisosyal ve şiddet içerikli davranışlar şeklinde dışa yönelimli davranış sorunları (dikkat eksik-liği-hiperaktivite bozukluğu, karşıt olma bozukluğu, davranım bo¬zukluğu) daha sıktır. Aile hekimleri ruhsal sorunları olan ergenler¬le sık karşılaşabilirler. Ancak bu sorunların aile hekimleri tarafından nasıl tanınacağı, ele alınacağı, kime, ne zaman ve nasıl yönlendiri¬leceği net değildir. Bu nedenle aile hekimlerinin öncelikle ruhsal bozukluklardan haberdar olmaları ve tanısal becerilerini artırmala¬rı için standardize eğitimlere ihtiyaçları vardır. Bu yazındaki amacı¬mız ergenlik döneminde sık karşılaşılabilecek ruhsal belirtilerden ve bozukluklardan söz etmek, ergenlerle görüşme yapılırken dik¬kat edilecek noktaları vurgulamak, neler yapılabileceği hakkında bilgi vermektir.
