Abstract (2. Language):
The student control strategies of principal and teachers determine the tone of the quality of life in schools. The purpose of this study was to examine the classroom teachers' student control ideology as perceived by teachers in Turkish public elementary schools. Data were collected from 300 teachers in 30 Turkish public elementary schools via questionnaires and demographical information forms. Frequency tables and t-test technique were employed to analyze the data. The result of the study indicate that teachers' student control strategies differ in terms of their gender, year of teaching, the school which they graduated, professional seniority and the number of students in their classroom. Furthermore, the results of the study indicate that teachers use the humanist or custodial control ideology depending on their student behavior characteristics. The paper concludes some recommendations for further study and practice.
