Abstract (2. Language):
It is known that the oral health status of disabled /mental handicapped children is poor comparing with the healthy children at the same age. The oral health status of mentally handicapped children could be affected by IQ level. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of parents' and teachers' oral hygiene education on the oral health status of mental handicapped children with different intelligence levels. Intraoral examinations of 71 female and 95 male (total 166) students were achieved at a special care school. Records of Gingival Index (GI), Plaque Index (PI), Calculus Index (CI) and DMpt were obtained. Parents and teachers were given oral hygiene education. A month later, 68 students aged between 7-18 selected randomly and reevaluated considering their IQ levels (25-44 [n=34] ve 45-75 [n=34]). Significant differences (student-t test) were found in PI and CI values (p<0.05) but there was no significant difference in the GI values between the groups. Obtained data showed that DMpt values were 2.051 and 1.949 respectively. The clinical parameters have not shown any differences between the groups and before and after the oral hygiene education (p> 0.05). Strong correlations were found between the father's education level and parents' attention (p<0.001). Results showed that, the oral health education of the parents' and teachers' did not change the existent poor oral health status of mentally handicapped children.
