Abstract (2. Language):
The reduction of residual ridges is a major unsolved problem. A clinical-rocntgenographie study was carried out to investigate the mandibular hcigth reduction and to evaluate the differences in the posterior arch widths of maxilla and mandibles in relationship to aging and the length of edentulism period. Data were collected from 90 edentulous male subjects. The period of the subjects was classified as 1 to 5, 6 to 1U and over 11 years in two resorptivc aging groups (40-59 and over 60). Measurement in panoramic radiographs was estimated by using the mental foramen as. reference. Maxillary arch widths immediately anterior to Lhe tubcrosites and mandibular arch widths immediately anterior to Lhe retromolar pads were measured on the stone easts. According to statistical analysis, the amount of resorption rate was greatest in the earlier surges of edentulism and slowed with loss of bone longevity of edentulism. The difference remained the same regardless to the amount of resorption or resorptive age, in the posterior arch widths of maxilla and mandibles.
