This paper is an introduction to psychotherapy and the psychotherapeutic milieu. Different schools of psychotherapy are discussedand the structure and the essence of the psychotherapeutic millieu are described. The goal of psychotherapy common to all schools is defined as the client gaining insight and adapting to the social environment. The importance of a caring relationship between the therapist-client is emphasized. The other important factors necessary in this relationship such as privacy, love, respect, acceptance, empathy and unconditional regard are also explained. The defence mechanisms such as regression, transferences resistance, that may be experienced by the client are also described. A successful therapeutic process is defined as the client becoming independent of the therapist and being able to stand on his/her own feet.

Bu çalışmada psikoterapinin ne olduğu hakkında genel bir bilgi verilmek istenmiştir. Bazı ekollerin psikoterapiye farklı yaklaşımları kısaca ele alınmış, daha sonra terapötik ortamın yapısı ve özü incelenmiştir. Parklı ekollerde farklı teknik ve yorumlarla uygulansa da, psikoterapide genel amacın, kişinin içgörü (insight) kazanıp çevresine daha uyumlu bir yaşam sürdürebilmesi olduğu belirtilmiştir, ilgiyi içeren terapötik bir yaklaşımın, hasta-hekim ya da danışan-danışman ilişkisindeki Önemli yeri vurgulanarak, bu ikili ilişki içinde yer alması gereken, gizlilik, sevgi, saygı, kabullenme, empati (eş-duyu), yargılamadan dinleme gibi faktörlerin üzerinde durulmuştur. Terapi ortamında oluşan regresyon, transferans, rezistans mekanizmaları kısaca açıklanmış, örnek bir ikili ilişki niteliğindeki sürecin sonlarına doğru, hasta veya danışanın terapiste bağımlı kalmayıp, inisiyatif kazanmasının başarılı bir terapinin kanıtı olacağı belirtilmiştir.
