One of the experts who was transferred from Europe to manage Izmit broad-cloth factory was James Binns.
James Binns’s wife, Ann Binns, kept a diary while in Turkey. Some parts of this diary were later published by
Kathryn Whitaker, who was a descendant of Ann.
First, it will be considered general view of the Ottoman industrialization in the nineteenth century with
main lines. The problems which is determined was exposed throughout this industrialization practice after
James Binns’s relationship with the Izmit broad-cloth factory will be considered. Finally, it will be taken up
primarily themes in Ann Binns’s diary briefly.

Osmanlı Devleti tarafından İzmit Çuka Fabrikası’nı yönetmek üzere getirilen uzmanlardan biri de İngiliz
fabrikatör James Binns’di. James Binns’in karısı Ann Binns Türkiye’de bir günlük tuttu. Bu günlükten bazı
kısımlar torunu Kathryn Whitaker tarafından yayımlanmıştır.
Bu makalede önce 19. Yüzyıl Osmanlı sanayileşmesinin genel görünümü ana hatları ile ortaya konulacaktır.
Bu sanayileşme tecrübesi esnasında ortaya çıkan sorunlar belirlendikten sonra, James Binns’in İzmit Çuka
fabrikası ile ilişkisi ortaya konulacak ve son olarak, Ann Binns’in günlüğündeki belirgin temalar kısaca ele
alınacaktır.
