Previously acquired knowlwdge structures in mind are called schemata. According to schema theory, comprehending a text is an interactive process between the reader’s bakground knowledge and the text. The role of schemata in reading comprehension process cannot be denied. Therefore, in this paper, the main aim is to indicate the importance and necessity of schema theory in comprehension. This paper aims to present information about schema theory, its characteristics, functions and effects on reading comprehension. Besides, in this study, it is mentioned the relationship between schema theory and reading comprehension, the contributions of schema theory to reading comprehension are bing discussed by making use of the explanations of the researchers studying in this field and finally, some recommendations for the the teachers in effective reading course are being suggested.

Zihinde bulunan önceden edinilmiş bilgi yapılarına şema adı verilmektedir. Şema kuramına göre, bir metni anlama okuyucunun ön bilgileri ve metin arasındaki karşılıklı etkileşimle mümkündür. Şemaların okuduğunu anlama sürecindeki rolü yadsınamaz. Bu nedenle, bu makalenin temel amacı şema kuramının okuduğunu anlamadaki önem ve gerekliliğini işaret etmektir. Bu çalışma şema kuramı, özellikleri, işlevleri ve okuduğunu anlama sürecine etkileri hakkında bilgi vermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Ayrıca bu makalede, şema kuramı ve okuduğunu anlama ilişkisi üzerinde durulmakta; bu kuramın okuduğunu anlama sürecine katkıları bu alanda çalışan araştırmacıların açıklamalarından yararlanarak tartışılmakta; son olarak, etkili bir okuma dersi için öğretmenlere birtakım öneriler sunulmaktadır.
