Abstract (2. Language):
The purpose of this study is to examine gender dimension in women athletes-related articles
and the amount of those articles in daily newspapers. Content analysis was used to analyze sports-related articles over a one month period (01-31 August 2004) in Hürriyet,
Cumhuriyet and Zaman newspapers. The findings of this study indicated that the 8.56 percent
of the total sports articles were devoted to women athletes, 79. 98 percent of the total
sports articles for men athletes and 11.46 percent of the total sports articles for both women
and men athletes. As a result of content analysis on women athletes related articles, it wasfound
that there is a gender statement (compulsory heterosexuality) in written texts (20%)
and gender dimension in photographs of the articles (12.90%). In addition, it was found that
24.19 percent of total photographs in women athletes-related articles are not related with
the theme of the articles. In conclusion, women athletes-related articles were under-represented
in number of the total sports articles in daily newspapers. Besides, there is a gender
dimension in both written texts and photographs in the women athletes-related articles.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, kadın sporcuların yer aldığı haberlerde toplumsal cinsiyet vurgusunu
ortaya çıkarmak ve bu haberlerin yazılı basında yer alma sıklığını tespit etmektir.
Çalışmada yöntem olarak Hürriyet, Cumhuriyet ve Zaman gazetelerinin 01-31 Ağustos 2004
tarihleri arasındaki spor haberleri üzerinde içerik analizi kullanılmıştır. Yapılan analiz sonucunda
elde edilen bulgular, toplam spor haberlerinin %8.56’sının kadın sporcuların yer aldığı
haberlerden, %79.98’inin erkek sporcuların yer aldığı haberlerden ve %11.46’sının karma
spor haberlerinden oluştuğunu göstermiştir. Kadın sporcuların yer aldığı haberler üzerinden
yapılan içerik analizi sonucunda, haberlerin %20’sinde toplumsal cinsiyet rollerinin (zorunlu
heteroseksüellik) belirgin olduğu saptanmıştır. Başka bir deyişle, kadın sporcuların yer aldığı
haberlerde anne, babaanne, eş, kız kardeş ve ev kadını gibi toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri kullanılmıştır.
Haber metinlerinde kullanılan fotoğrafların %12.90’nında toplumsal cinsiyet vurgusu
öne çıkarken, %24.19’unun da haber ile ilişkili olmadığı bulunmuştur. Sonuç olarak,
günlük gazete sayfalarında çıkan kadın sporcuların yer aldığı haberlerin sayısı çok az olmakla
beraber, bu sayı belirli spor dallarında yoğunlaşmaktadır. Bunun yanında, hem kadın
sporcular ile ilgili haber metinlerinde hem de fotoğraflarda toplumsal cinsiyet vurgusunun yer
aldığı belirlenmiştir.
