Abstract (2. Language):
Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) has been studied within various parameters concerning the modernist style and complex
imageries of the text. The last episode of the novel, “Penelope”, where Joyce constructs a modern and highly
sensual version of the eponymous mythical character in the form of Molly, has also received multi-angled critical
attention, particularly from scholars affiliated with feminist literary criticism. The content of the text being related
to the rhythms of the female body, Joyce’s rewriting of the mythologised Penelope has polarised critical responses:
whilst some critics found the representation of the body conveyed by Molly to be a mere figment of male fantasy,
others have pointed out the liberatory stance of Molly’s unruly monologue, highlighting the ways in which her
narrative epitomised the feminine writing (écriture féminine) as opposed to the phallocentric discourse by offering
a closely knitted textual representation of the female bodily experience. In line with the positive criticisms that lay
emphasis on Joyce’s anti-patriarchal construction of the female embodiment, this work aims to explore Molly’s
narrative as an empowering and iconoclastic discourse on the female embodiment, particularly with regard to
Molly’s expression of her sensual pleasures, and the way she voices her desires without any social and cultural
constraints. In so doing, this work examines the ways in which Molly’s account of nonconforming and unrestricted
corporeality reveals her bold assertion of her strong sense of individualism. Thus, as this essay argues, the unruly
depiction of Molly’s experiences with her embodiment finds a stimulating mode of expression in the way her
unobstructed flow of thoughts is represented within her lexically disordered narrative. That is to say, Molly’s
narrative offers a stylised discourse on the female embodiment, achieved via the construction of a harmonious
unity between the form, style, and content, which arguably corresponds to a sense of wholeness that unifies the
body and mind. This unique harmony, as this work explores, not only furnishes the text with an abundant artistic
energy, but also facilitates the creation of a cyclical narrative in which a controversial critical dialogue between
the idealised images of femininity prevalent in Joyce’s cultural landscape and Joyce’s own counter-construction
of femininity is elaborated within the Penelopian ebb and flow, and weaving and unravelling of Molly’s soliloquy.
