Ebi Salt Dani’s Views on Modality
This study explores the modal propositions and modal syllogisms of Ebi Salt Dani (d.
579/1134), a contemporary of Ghazzali. Contrary to the approaches of most of the
logicians im Islam, he considers discussion of the modal syllogisms important and
examines in details all kind of modal syllogisms and displayed their tables. It starts with
his survey of all types of modal proposition, which can be classified in four main
categories: absolute, possible, necessary, impossible. It gives Ebi Salt Dani’s definition of
absolute, possible, necessary and impossible propositions.
