Roles of 5-6 Year Old Children Who Have Authoritative and Democratic Parents in the Playing House Game

Problem Statement: Is there any effect of authoritative and democratic parents on 5-6 year old children playing house?
Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the roles of 5-6 year old children who have authoritative and democratic parents in playing house. With regards to this aim, further investigations were done on the roles of girls and boys who have authoratitive and democratic parents in playing house, the relationship between gender and toys, and the relationship between parents' education levels and roles of children in playing house.
Methods(s): A total of 194 children, 194 parents and 10 teachers participated to the study. Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI) was performed on 194 parents. With regards to PARI, 10 parents who had the highest authoritative attitude point and 10 parents who have the highest democratic attitude point were selected. These 20 children were observed during the study. In this study children during free time were observed by two researchers for 30 minute periods in a day over four weeks. Observation results were recorded in the Play Observation Form. Also, a survey form with closed-ended and open-ended questions was given to the teachers about the roles of children in playing house. The data was evaluated as frequencies, and percentages, and x2 analysis.
Findings and Discussions: In this study, it was determined that %86.1 of the parents were overprotective, 8.8% were authoratitarian and 6.2% of parentswere democratic. In this study, it was seen that girls preferred the most dolls and dishes and boys preferred the most legos, blocks and cars. As a result of this study, it was observed that 80% of girls who had democratic parents
were concurren and sociable. 80% of girls who had authoritative parents were bossy, social and oppressive. However 80% of boys who had democratic parents were patient, 60% of boys who had authoratitive parents were social, leaders and adaptable. 60% of boys who had democratic parents were social, adaptable and leaders. It was determined that girls who had democratic parents adopted the role of a mothers and 60% of boys who had democratic parents adopted the role of father. Though girls of 40% who had authoratitave parents adopted to the role of mother and sister, 40% of boys with authoratitave parents adopted the role of a brother.
Conclusions and Recommendations: Girls who had democratic parents adopted the role of mother much more than girls who had authoritative parents. This case revealed that girls who had democratic parents took their mothers as a model more than girls who had authoratitive parents. Also, it showed that parent -child communication was strong between democratic mothers and their children. It was determined that roles preferred by children were affected by their parents. Boys showed their roles with regards to their parents' attitudes. With this study, it was determined that roles of children in playing house changed with regards to gender. It suggests that parents have to be role models to their children. For this reason, parents have to be educated about how to behave to their child. Teachers have to observe children in play time activities and gain knowledge about child psychological, spiritual conditions, family structure, parent attitudes and behavior. With this teachers can direct parents.

Bu araştırmanın genel amacı, otoriter ve demokratik tutuma sahip anne-babaları olan 5-6 yaş grubu çocukların evcilik oyunlarında üstlendikleri rolleri incelemektir. Araştırma kapsamına tesadüfî örnekleme yoluyla önce 194 çocuk, 194 ebeveyn ve 10 öğretmen katılmıştır. Araştırma kapsamına alınan 194 anne-babaya Aile Hayatı ve Çocuk Yetiştirme Tutum Ölçeği (PARI) uygulanmıştır. Uygulanan Aile Hayatı ve Çocuk Yetiştirme Tutum Ölçeğine göre en yüksek demokratik tutum puanına sahip 10 anne-babanın çocuğu ve en yüksek otoriter (baskıcı) tutum puanına sahip 10 anne-babanın çocuğu seçilmiştir. Araştırma kapsamına alınan anne-balardan demokratik tutuma sahip olanların çoğunluğunun yükseköğretim mezunu olduğu; otoriter tutuma sahip olanların çoğunluğunun ise ilköğretim mezunu olduğu saptanmıştır. Araştırma süresince toplam 20 çocuk araştırmacılar tarafından gözlenmiştir. Ayrıca öğretmenlere çocukların evcilik oyunlarında üstlendikleri rolleri belirtmelerine ilişkin bir anket uygulanmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarının belirlenmesinde sayısallaştırma yoluna başvurulmuş, frekans ve yüzdeler halinde değerlendirmeler yapılmış ve Ki Kare Testi ile tutumlar arasındaki ilişki ifade edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda; demokratik ebeveynlerin kız çocuklarında en fazla uyumluluk ve sosyallik; otoriter ebeveynlerin kız çocuklarında ise en fazla liderlik, sosyallik ve baskıcı olma özelliklerinin gözlendiği, demokratik tutuma sahip ebeveynlerin erkek çocuklar, otoriter ebeveynlerin erkek çocuklarına göre daha hoşgörülü olduğu belirlenmiştir. Demokratik tutuma sahip ebeveynlerin kız çocukların, otoriter tutuma sahip ebeveynlerin kız çocuklarına göre anne rolünü daha çok benimsedikleri; otoriter tutuma sahip ebeveynlerin erkek çocuklarının ise özellikle olumsuz baba tutum ve davranışlarını sergilemekten kaçındıkları belirlenmiştir.
