Dişheki iriliğinde tıbbi olarak riskli hastalara dental girişim önccsu sistemik enfeksiyon gelişimini önlemek amacıyla prol'ilnktik antibiyotik uygulanmaktadır. Bakte-riyel direncin dünyada yaygınlaşması vc antibiyotiklerin etkinliklerinin giderek azalması nedeniyle 1997 yılında Amerikan Kalp Birliği (AHA), 1990 yılındaki antibiyotik profilak-sisiyle ilgili yaptığı önerileri yeniden gü/Acn geçirmiş, bu konuda yeni öneriler sunmuştur Bu öneriler ve dişhekimliğinde tıbbi olarak riskli hastalarda antibiyotik profilak si siyle ilgili literatürlerin bilgisi jşığjndo, dişhekim-liğinde tıbbi riski olan hastalara uygulanacak antibiyotik profilaksisi gölden geçirilmiştir. Literatürde denial girişimle ilgili antibiyotik profilaksisi yapjİması gereken olgularda ağız hijyeninin iyileştirilmesinin ve ağı/da bakteri yemi yc neden olacak kaynaklann elimine edilmesinin antibiyotik profilaksisi kadar önemli olduğu vurgulan maktadır. Ayrıca antibiyotik profilaksisi yapılması gereken hastalarda, dişhekiminin antibiyotik vermeden önt;e antibiyotikle ilgili toksisite, alferji ve bakteriye! direnç gibi kompllkasy onları hesaba katarak profilaksiye karar vermesinin önemli olduğu bildirilmektedir.
