Abstract (2. Language):
This study was carried out to investigate the short-term effects of three mouthwashes with different chemical agents (chlorhexidine gluconate, benzydamine hydrochloride and polyvinylpyrro-lidone-iodine) on the oral health of the subjects undergoing orthodontic treatment. 60 subjects with an average age of 14.5±2.4 years were divided into three treatment groups of 15 subjects (%0.2 chlorhexidine gluconate, %0.15 benzydamine hydrochloride and %7.5 polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine)and one control group (sterile isotonic saline containing %0.9 sodium chloride). Gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI) and gingival bleeding index (GBI) scores at the beginning of the treatment and one month after the treatment were evaluated by the same periodontologist. The subjects with an gingival index score higher than "1" at the beginning of the treatment were included in the treatment group, whereas the ones with a score lower than "1" formed the control group. The subjects having index scores higher than "2" were excluded. Differences between the groups were analyzed by means of variance analysis. When gingival index, plaque index and gingival bleeding index scores were evaluated, positive changes were observed in oral hygiene after one-month use of mouthwash. GI scores decreased significantly in all mouthwash groups at the end of the treatment and there were no differences between groups. Benzydamine and chlorhexidine containing mouthwashes were found to be effective in reducing the gingival bleeding and plaque formation. As a result of the study, mouthwashes were found out to be effective in improving the oral hygiene in the subject undergoing an orthodontic treatment.
