Abstract (2. Language):
Diabetes is a life-long disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. It can be caused by too lit¬tle insulin, resistance to insulin, or both. Microangio-pathy is one of the major complications of diabetes mellitus. Because of microangiopathy small vessels may be effect. In this study Doppler sonography was u¬sed in the assessment of central mandibular blood flow. The characteristics of blood flow in the mental artery, the larger terminal branch of the inferior alveolar ar¬tery, in the patients with DM and healthy volunteers. The variables analysed were patency, peak systolic ve¬locity (PSV:cm/sn), end-diastolic velocity (EDV: cm/sn), pulsality index(PI), resistive index (RI) and time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMAX). Mann-Whitney U test showed significant differences(P<0.05) between the patients with DM and healthy volunteers for EDV. The difference in other measurements bet¬ween the patients with DM and healthy volunteers was not significant. The Doppler ultrasonography is simple and could be used to influence clinical decisions.
