ORAL MUCOSA AND EXFOLIATIVE CYTOLOGY

Abstract (2. Language):
Exfoliative cytology is the histopathologic examination of cells that have been obtained by their physical removal, followed by their placement on a glass slide, and then appropriately stained. Cytobrush sampling is more frequently used for this examination, since it maximizes the number of cells obtained, and facilitates their uniform distribution onto the microscope slide. Characterization is traditionally based on microscopic examination of fixed and stained cell smears. Exfoliative oral cytology is a simple, non-aggressive, and relatively painless technique. It is thus well accepted by patients and suitable for routine application in population screening programmes, for early analysis of suspect lesions, and for pre-and post-treatment monitoring of confirmed malignat lesions. Therefore oral exfoliative cytology is attractive option for the early diagnosis of oral cancer and oral cellular alteration of systemic problems such as diabetes mellitus.
