Hungarian meteorologist Antal Réthly (1879-1975), was invited to Turkey during the
formative years of the Turkish Republic to establish and organize the meteorology
network of the country in 1925-1927. He was the pioneer to found the Institute of
Meteorology in Ankara. Antal Réthly travelled across Anatolia to construct
observation stations. Besides the observation stations, he closely investigated the
flora, soil structure and water sources of the country during his journeys. He got
closely accustomed to the rich Anatolian culture. In addition to these investigations,
he published observation results concerning the meteorology. Locally and nationally well-known scientist, Antal Rethly made great contributions to Turkish meteorology
and its development throughout his two-year residence in the country. Though he
wished much, after he completed his contract time, he had to turn down an offer
made by the Turkish State and turn back to his country due to some works to be
done in his country. He published his memories and his evaluations of Turkish
meteorology in Hungary. In the present study, in the context of Turkish-Hungarian
relations at that time, the contributions of Antal Rethly to Turkish meteorology are
presented to Hungarian sources.

Macar meteorolog Antal Réthly (1879-1975) Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kurulus
yıllarında Türk Hükûmeti tarafından ülkede meteoroloji agının düzenlenmesi için
1925-1927 yılları arasını kapsayan bir sözlesme ile Türkiye’ye davet edilmistir. Antal
Réthly, Ankara’da Meteoroloji Enstitüsünü kurmustur. Gözlem istasyonları
olusturmak için Anadolu gezisine çıkmıs, hemen hemen bütün Anadolu’yu
dolasmıstır. Bu yolculukları sırasında gözlem istasyonlarının yanı sıra, gittigi yerlerin
bitki örtüsü, toprak yapısı ve su kaynaklarını da yakından incelemis, Anadolu’nun
zengin kültürünü yakından tanımıstır. Bu çalısmalarının yanı sıra meteorolojiye ait
gözlem sonuçlarını yayımlamıstır. Ülkesinde ve dünya çapında tanınmıs bir bilim
adamı olan Antal Réthly, iki yıllık Türkiye ikametgâhı sırasında Türk meteorolojisine
çok önemli hizmetler yaparak Türk meteorolojisinin gelismesine katkıda
bulunmustur. Türkiye’deki görev süresinin bitiminden sonra yapılacak isleri nedeniyle,
çok istemesine ragmen, Türk Hükûmetinin önerdigi yeni bir sözlesmeyi kabul
edememis ve yurduna geri dönmüstür. Türkiye ile ilgili anılarını ve Türk
meteorolojisine ait degerlendirmelerini Macaristan’da yayımlamıstır. Macar
kaynaklarına dayanarak Türk Macar iliskileri çerçevesinde onun Türk meteorolojisine
katkıları ele alınıp degerlendirilmistir.
