Coping Strategies Used by a Group of Elderly Living in Nursing Homes

In this study the coping strategies of a group of 59 elderly (aged 66 to 95 years, mean age X =71.8) living in nursing homes were examined. Coping was measured using the Coping Strategy Indicator (CSI). Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and a set of questions about their background were administered Statistical analysis indicated that the use of less effective coping strategies, such as avoidance, declined with age. Those who had never married also tended to rely on avoidance more frequently than the married or widowed elderly. Level of autonomy and peer support were positively correlated with the use of effective coping, and negatively related to the level of depression. Results are discussed in regard to the quality of life of the elderly who reside in nursing homes, and the development of preventive counseling programs.

Bu çalışmada huzurevinde yaşayan, yaş ortalaması X =71.8 olan, 59 bireyden oluşan bir grup yaşlının genel olarak yaşadıkları stresörlerle ilgili olarak llandıkları başaçıkma yolları, depresyon düzeyi, bazı kişilik özellikleri ve sosyo-demografik değişkenlerle ilişkili olarak araştırılmıştır. Başaçıkma yolları Stresle Başaçıkma Ölçeği (SBÖ) kullanılarak ölçülmüştür. Araştırma kapsamına giren bireylerin depresyon düzeyini ölçmek üzere Beck Depresyon Ölçeği (BDÖ) uygulanmıştır. İstatistiksel analizler sonucu elde edilen bulgularda rapor edilen problem çözme davranışının erkeklerde (n=30), kadınlara (n=29) oranla daha fazla görüldüğü, yaş düzeyi arttıkça kaçınma davranışının azaldığı, hiç evlenmemiş yaşlıların evli veya dul olanlara göre daha çok kaçınma davranışını rapor ettiği, özerk olma ve arkadaş desteğine sahip olmanın etkin başa çıkma stratejilerinin kullanımıyla pozitif yönde depresyon düzeyi ile ise negatif yönde ilişkili olduğu belirlenmiştir. Sonuçlar, huzurevinde yaşayan yaşlıların yaşam kalitelerinin yükseltilmesi ile ilgili olarak yapılacak önleyici psikolojik danışmanlık programlarıyla ilgili olarak tartışılmıştır.
