Abstract (2. Language): 
Although Internet has become one of the indispensable media of our daily and professional life, it has also introduced several problems. These problems can be identified as the unscalable size of Internet, the insufficiency of information retrieval tools, the lack of open access to entire Internet for entire audience and frequent change of URLs or disappearence of the web pages af¬ter a period of time. Adding metadata to the Internet sources is one of the initiatives to organise this particular unclassified huge information source and to improve information discovery on the Internet. It was claimed that if the developers of search engines and the creators of web pages use the metadata, the performance of web search would be improved. This descriptive study examines metadata initiatives, standards, tools and applications, and try to promote the idea of adding metadata to the Internet sources.

Internet, gündelik ve akademik yaşamımızın vazgeçilmezlerinden biri haline gelmekle birlikte bir dizi sorunu da beraberinde getirmiştir. Söz konusu sorunlar arasında, Internet'te yer alan bilgi hacminin büyük olması, bu bilgiye erişim araçlarının yetersizliği, her tür bilginin herkesin erişimine açık olmaması ve kaynakların adreslerinin değişmesi ya da belirli bir zaman dilimi içinde silinmesini saymak olanaklıdır. Sınıflaması olmayan bu büyük hacimli bilgi yığınını düzenlemek ve bilgi erişimi geliştirmek için son yıllarda gerçekleştirilen girişimlerin başında Internet'te yer alan bilgi kaynaklarına üst verileri eklemek gelmektedir. Üst veri kullanımının arama motorlarını geliştirenler ile Web sitelerinin içeriklerini yaratanlar tarafından kullanılması durumunda Web aramalarındaki etkinliğin artacağı iddia edilmektedir. Bu tanımlayıcı çalışmada üst veri girişimleri, standartları ve uygulamaları incelenmiş, elekt¬ronik kaynaklara üst verilerin eklenmesi fikrinin önemi vurgulanmaya çalışılmıştır.
