Cappadocia wa s one of the most crucial religious centres of Byzantine (East Roman) Empire, which was among the most powerful civilizations of the Middle Ages. Nevşehir being the prominent, Kayseri, Aksaray and Niğde were the cities of the region of Cappadocia, where the Christian churches and monastaries were situated. The Christianity in the region did not come to an end with the capture of it by the Seljuks, but it still carried on in the periods of the Emirates and the Ottoman Empire. Some of the religious structures constructed both in the Middle Ages by the Christians and in the Ottoman regimen by the non-Muslim minorities were scientifically surveyed and published. However, the religious monuments of these minorities in the region, especially the ones constructed just after the Conquest, have not been sufficiently regarded and analyzed to our day. In this present study, four rock-cut and two built churches, situated at one of the most important settlements of Cappadocia, Ürgüp (H. Prokopios/Prokopi) are examined. Besides, a little information is also meant to be given about a Russian 'Holy Person', Osios Ioannis Rossos.

Orta Çağ'ın güçlü uygarlıklarından biri olan Bizans İmparatorluğu (Doğu Roma lmparatorluğu)'nun önemli dini merkezlerinden biri de Kappadokia'dır. Günümüzde başta Nevşehir olmak üzere, Kayseri, Aksaray ve Niğde, Kappadokia bölgesindeki Hıristiyan kilise/manastırlarını barındıran şehirlerdir. Bu bölgede, Bizans İmparatorluğu ile başlayan Hıristiyanlık, Anadolu'nun Selçuklular tarafından alınmasıyla sona ermemiş; Beylikler ve Osmanlı dönemlerinde de devam etmiştir. Gerek Orta Çağ'da, gerek Osmanlı döneminde yaşayan gayrimüslimlerin inşa ettiği dini yapıların bazıları bilimsel açıdan ele alınmış, incelenmiş ve yayınlanmıştır. Ancak özellikle de fetihten sonra bölgede, Osmanlı yönetiminde yaşayan gayrimüslim vatandaşların eserleri günümüze kadar yeterince araştırılmamıştır Bu yazıda, Kappadokia'nın önemli yerleşimlerinden biri olan Ürgüp'te bulunan (H. Prokopios/Prokopi) ve bu güne kadar yayınlanmayan dört kayaya oyma, günümüze gelememiş iki kagir kilise ele alınacaktır. Ayrıca, 18. veya 19. yüzyılda Ürgüp'te yaşamış Rus asıllı "Kutsal Bir Kişi" (Osios Ioannis Rossos) ve ona ithaf edilen kilise hakkında kısa bilgi verilecektir.
