Abstract (2. Language):
In this study, the effects of strength training on body composition and the plasma levels of total thyroxine (TT4), growth hormone (GH), total testosterone (TT) and insulin have been examined. 17 male handball players, (19.25 ± 1.77 years old, 181.68 ± 8.73 cm height and 71.00 ± 10.15 kg weight) participated in the study during the transition period of their tra¬ining season. Subjects were underwent six weeks of strength training which was consisted of training and resting days followed each other. Just before and after the first and last tra¬ining period, plasma hormone levels were evaluated. Percent body fat along with leg, back and handgrip strength were measured. Compared to pretraining values, plasma TT4, GH and TT levels increased significantly following strengt training in both first and last training bouts. Plasma insulin levels were significantly lower following the first training bout (P<0.05). Six weeks of training did not effect basal hormone levels. On the other hand, strength tra¬ining resulted in a decrease in body fat percent and an increase in fat free body mass. We have concluded that, one of the responses of the body to acute exercise is the changes in hormone levels. On the other hand, 6 weeks of strength training did not affect the plasma hormone levels.
