The purpose of this study is to compare the attitudes of male and female university students toward homosexual athletes. The participants of the study were three hundred sixteen male (Mage = 22.59, SD = 1.30) and two hundred fifty one female (Mage = 21.80, SD = 1.35) studying at Middle East Technical University. Turkish version of “Homophobia in Sports Scale” was used to collect data. Chi-square analysis was used to analyze the data. Results of the analysis demonstrated a significant difference between male and female students’ attitudes towards male athletes who revealed that he was homosexual, but demonstrated a non significant difference towards female athletes who revealed that she was lesbian. Additionally, no significant difference is found between male and female students in terms of other sports fans’ opinions toward the homosexual athletes. A significant difference is also found between male and female students’ opinions of fans positive attitudes/acceptance level towards homosexual athletes in various sports branches including auto racing, golf, track and field, swimming, gymnastics, figure skating, and tennis. Lastly, results demonstrated a significant difference between male and female students in terms of negative labels used to describe homosexual athletes such as “perverted” and stupid”. In conclusion, male and female students demonstrated positive feelings towards homosexual athletes, but they also have negative feelings in some parameters of the Homophobia in Sports Scale.

Bu çalışmanın amacı erkek ve kadın üniversite öğrencilerinin eşcinsel sporculara karşı tutumlarının karşılaştırılmasıdır. Çalışmanın örneklemini Ortadoğu Teknik Üniversitesi’nde öğrenim gören 316 genç erkek (x yaş = 22.59, SS = 1.30) ve 251 genç kadın (xyaş = 21.80, SS = 1.35) öğrenci oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada veri toplamak amacı ile “Sporda Homofobi Ölçeği”nin Türkçe biçimi kullanılmıştır. Erkek ve kadın öğrencilerin tutumları arasında bir fark olup olmadığının belirlenmesi amacı ile ki-kare uygunluk testi uygulanmıştır. İstatistiksel olarak anlamlılık değeri p<.05 olarak kabul edilmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan erkek ve kadın öğrencilerin verdikleri yanıtlarda eşcinsel olduğunu açıklayan erkek sporcuya karşı düşüncelerinde fark bulunmasına rağmen, kadın sporcuya karşı olan düşüncelerinde bir fark bulunmamıştır. Ayrıca, diğer spor taraftarlarının eşcinsel olduğunu açıklayan sporcuya karşı olan düşünceleri konusunda da erkek ve kadın öğrenciler arasında bir fark bulunmamıştır. Erkek ve kadın öğrencilerin spor dallarına göre cinsel tercihini açıklayan sporcuya karşı taraftarların kabul edicilik düzeylerine yönelik fikirlerinde araba yarışı, golf, atlebitizm, yüzme, cimnastik, buz pateni ve tenis dallarında fark bulunmuştur. Son olarak da eşcinsel olduğunu açıklayan sporcuya karşı öğrencilerin kullandıkları olumlu ve olumsuz sıfatlarla ilgili verilerin analiz sonuçlarında erkek ve kadın öğrencilerin olumlu sıfatlar konusunda farklı düşünmedikleri, ancak “sapık” ve “aptal” sıfatlarında fark gösterdikleri ortaya konmuştur. Sonuç olarak bu çalışmada erkek ve kadın öğrencilerin Sporda Homofobi Ölçeği kapsamında eşcinsel sporculara karşı düşüncelerinin olumlu bulunmasına karşın, bazı parametrelerde olumsuz fikirlerinin de olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.
