Objective: To evaluate tear functions in patients with pterygium and pingueculae. Materials and Methods: 22 eyes of 15 patients with pterygium and 24 eyes of 14 patients with pingueculae were evaluated for Schirmer test, corneal tear film break up time (BUT) and tear meniscus height (TMH). The results were compared with 26 eyes of 13 healty subjects. Results: The mean Schirmer test values were 11,68±5,11; 10,00±6,75; 15,50±4,90 mm in patiens with pterygium, pingueculae and in controls respectively. When compared with control group Schirmer test results were significantly decreased in patiens with pingueculae (p=0,03). The mean BUT values were 8,68±3,74; 9,12±6,38; 14,9±6,69 seconds in pterygium, pinguecula and control groups respectively. Mean BUT values was significantly reduced in the pterygium and pingueculae groups (p=0,01, p=0,02). Mean TMH values were 1,09±0,54; 1,02±0,61; 1,46±0,60 mm in pterygium, pingueculae and control groups respectively. In pinguecula group TMH was significantly reduced. Between pterygium and pinguecula groups Schirmer test, (p=0,574), BUT (p=0,96) and GMY (p=0,911) values were not different. Conclusion: Pterygium and pinguecula change tear functions.

Amaç: Pterjium ve piguekulalı olgularda gözyaşı fonksiyonlarını değerlendirmek. Materyal ve Metod: 15 pterjiumlu hastanın 22, 14 pinguekulalı hastanın 24 gözünün Schirmer testi, korneal film yıkılma zamanı (KFYZ) ve gözyaşı menisküs yüksekliği (GMY) değerlendirildi. Bu değerler 13 sağlıklı kişinin 26 gözü ile karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: Ortalama Schirmer testi ölçümleri pterjium, pinguekula ve kontrol grubunda sırasıyla 11,68±5,11; 10,00±6,75; 15,50±4,90’ mm idi. Kontrol grubu ile karşılaştırıldığında pinguekula hastalarında Schirmer testi değerleri anlamlı biçimde düşüktü. (p=0,03). Pterjium, pinguekula ve kontrol gruplarındaki ortalama KFYZ değerleri sırasıyla 8,68±3,74; 9,12±6,38; 14,9±6,69’ saniye idi. Ortalama KFYZ değerleri pterjium ve pinguekula grubunda anlamlı ölçüde düşüktü (p=001, p=0,02). Ortalama GMY değerleri pterjium, pinguekula ve kontrol grubunda sırasıyla 1,09±0,54; 1,02±0,61; 1,46±0,60’ mm idi. Pinguekula grubunda GMY anlamlı ölçüde azalmıştı. (p=0,024). Pterjium ve pinguekula grupları arasındaki Schirmer testi (p=0,574), KFYZ (p=0,96) ve GMY (p=0,911) değerleri farklı değildi. Sonuç: Pterjium ve pinguekula gözyaşı fonksiyonlarını değiştirir.
