Siiıiir materyalleri, her cerrahı ilgilendiren temel konulardan birisidir. İlk çağlardan beri çok çeşitli maddeler siiıiir anuıavla kullanılmış olmasına karşın I 930 kırdan sonra polimer kimyasmdaki ilerlemelerle hu gimim bilinen çeşitli sentetik siitiir materyalleri geliştirilmiştir.
