Letter of credits are important payment terms used in international trade transactions. International
Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Rules, namely, Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits are
the rules generally acknowledged by related trade parties and the final publication came into life on 1 July
2007 is publication no: 600. Comparing with other payment terms, letter of credit transactions pre
requisite a specialization. Without handling properly with a special care, letter of credits will not furnish
any payment guarantee to the exporter neither do furnish any guarantee to the importer regarding the
quality and suppy of the goods they requested.
This paper focuses on the historical development of letter of credits, its definition together with the
documents, discrepancies under letter of credit transactions and the latest advances in this field brought by
UCP 600.

Akreditifli ödeme şekli, uluslararası ticarette kullanılan önemli bir ödeme şeklidir. Bu ödeme şeklinin
uygulanmasında Milletlerarası Ticaret Odası (MTO) tarafından düzenlenen yeknesak kurallar genel kabul
görmüş kurallar olup en son düzenleme 1 Temmuz 2007 tarihli 600 No’lu yayınla getirilmiştir.
Bir ödeme şekli olarak akreditifler, diğer ödeme şekilleri ile mukayese edildiğinde, özel bir uzmanlık
gerektirmektedir. Bu uzman bakış açısı ile akreditif işleme alınmadığı takdirde, ihracat akreditifleri
herhangi bir ödeme garantisi sağlamamakta, ithalat akreditifleri malın kalitesinde ve temininde beklenen
güvenceyi temin etmemektedir.
Bu çalışmada, akreditiflerin tarihsel gelişimi ve tanımı ile birlikte belgeler, rezerv konuları ve bu konular
kapsamında UCP 600 ile gelen farklılıklar incelenmiştir.
