Abstract (2. Language):
Gingival hyperplasia is a well-known side effect of the drug phenytoin. Recently, however, nifedipine and cyclosporine have been implicated in the causation of a phenytoin-like gingival enlargement. Nifedipine is an increasingly used medication for the treatment of vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina and ventricular arrhytmias. Cyclosporine is a potent im-munosuppresive compound that has been used in conjunction with kidney, liver, heart and other transplants. Studies have shown that hyperplasia can be prevented with careful oral hygiene before and during drug therapy. Because, several authors concluded that phenytoin, nifedipine and cyclosporine induced gingival overgrowth may be related to gingival irritants such as plaque and calculus. This article has summarized observations and results of controlled laboratory and clinical studies of drug-induced gingival hyperplasia associated with nifedipine and cyclosporine use.
