Abstract (2. Language):
The role of entertainment in both the mass media and daily life, and its effects on individuals and societies, is growing. The fact that the mass media is the primary entertainment provider today increases the need for academic research on entertainment. This article, arising from such need, aims to evaluate the theoretical approaches made to entertainment. Accordingly, in this article, the concept of entertainment is discussed with a special emphasis on the relationship of entertainment with art and information. Then, the psychological, cultural and ideological effects of entertainment on individuals and society are addressed. Psychological effects mainly contain the models developed as a result of research by media psychology scholars on entertainment. Cultural effects are discussed with respect to the stereotypes used in entertainment media, the effects of sexual and violent content of entertainment media on audiences, and the celebrity culture. Ideological effects are addressed with a special emphasis on the impact of entertainment on political manipulation of the masses. Finally, the entertainment industry is discussed with specific reference to its origins, distinctive features and its share in the global economy.
