Abstract (2. Language):
This paper aims to investigate the suicides committed by two female
characters, Sophocles’ Antigone (Antigone) and Shakespeare’s Hamlet
(Ophelia), in terms of historical, philosophical and religious contexts of the
ages in which these two plays were produced. While suicide was an honourable
act in Ancient Greece, it was condemned and regarded as a sacrilege in the
sixteenth century Christian world. In the context of a feminist interpretation of
the plays, however, both suicides that are committed by these women
characters can be read as a rebellion against the patriarchal system. Therefore,
suicide becomes a conscious choice and accordingly a way for these women to
break their enforced silence. Death in the form of suicide, as a matter of fact,
functions as an outlet for Antigone and Ophelia to get out of the established
system and the unbalanced world represented by the patriarchal power which
diminishes their autonomous identities to the point where they become nonentities.

Bu makale, Sophocles’in Antigone’sindeki Antigone ve Shakespeare’in
Hamlet’indeki Ophelia karakterlerinin intiharlını oyunların yazıldığı
dönemlerin tarihi, felsefi ve dini arka planlarını göz önüne alarak
incelemektedir. Antik Yunan’da intihar onurlu bir eylemken, on altıncı yüzyıl
Hristiyan âleminde yasaklanmıştır ve dine saygısızlık olarak görülmüştür.
Ancak feminist bir bakış açısıyla, iki oyundaki kadın karakterlerin intiharları
ataerkil sisteme bir baş kaldırı olarak okunabilir. Bu nedenle, intihar bilinçli bir
seçim halini alır ve bu kadın karakterlerin bastırılan suskunluklarını
bozmalarını sağlar. İntiharla gelen ölüm, Antigone ve Ophelia’nın, öz
kimliklerini bastırıp onları hiçliğe iten dengesiz ataerkil gücün kurulu
düzeninden kurtulmalarını sağlar.
