The purpose of the paper are to provide a general overview of the transfor¬mation of local government in Thatcher era, and also to bring up argues about these changes, tendency and future of local government system. Therefore, in this article examined economic and social feature of the period, approach of Thatcher and new right principle to public sector and local government, centrali¬zation and market policies.

Bu çalışmanın amacı Thatcher döneminde yerel yönetimler alanında mey¬dana gelen gelişmelerin yeni eğilimler çerçevesinde incelenerek yerel yönetim sisteminin dönüşüm, yöneliş ve geleceğine yönelik tartışmaların ortaya konulma¬sıdır. Çalışmada, yerel yönetimlerde değişikliklere neden olan dönemin ekono¬mik ve sosyal özellikleri, kamu yönetimi anlayışının değişmesi, Thatcher ve ye¬ni sağ prensiplerin kamu kesimi ve yerel yönetimlere yaklaşımı ile merkezileşme ve piyasalaşma ile ilgili politikalar ve özellikleri incelenmiştir.
