Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ndeki ticarî değere sahip orman alanları genellikle yalnız yılda ortalama olarak en az 500 mm yağış alan bölgelerde görülür. Bu kadar ya da daha fazla yıllık ortalama yağışla ormanlık alanlar; çiftlikler, endüstriler ve yerleşme merkezleri için başlıca ve en büyük su kaynaklarıdır. Bu ormanlık alanlar genellikle akarsu yataklarının da çok dik olduğu dağlık arazide bulunduğundan' buraların su verimi aynı zamanda hidroelektrik güç bakımından da önemlidir. Bazı yerlerde ve yılın belli zamanlarında su mevcudu tarım, endüstri ve belediyelerin ihtiyaçlarını tam olarak •karşılamağa yetmez Dolayısıyla bu gibi yerlerde, su verimini -ya toplam miktar itibarivle, ya da yılın su ihtiyacı en çok olan zamanlarında- arttırması beklenebilecek ağaç kesimi şekilleri üzerinde durulmalıdır.
