Bitki ve toprak örnekleri, Kuzey Central Minnesota'daki çok ince kumlu balçık topraklar üzerinde bulunan 40 yaşındaki birbirine komşu Pinus resinosa Ait., Pinus banksiana Lamb., Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss ve Populus tremu-loides Michx., P. grandidentata Michx. meşcerelerinden alınmıştır. Total ağaç blyokütle miktarı en fazla Pinus resinosa Ait. türünde bulunmuştur. Bunu kavak, lâdin ve Pinus banksiana Lamb, türleri izlemektedir. Ağaçlardaki besin maddelerinin ağırlıkları (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) ise en fazla kavak türlerinde bulunmuştur. Bunu genellikle lâdin, Pinus resinosa Ait. ve Pinus banksiana Lamb, türleri izlemektedir. Yüksek oranlardaki biyokütle ve besin maddeleri özellikle kavak kabukları ile ladinin iğne yaprakları ve dallarında bulur.muş-tür. Alt tabakadaki biyokütlenin, vejetasyon-toprak kompleksine ait total organik maddedeki payı % 1,2'den az olmasına karşın, besin maddeleri için bu oran % 5'e kadar çıkmaktadır. Üst topraktaki değiştirilebilir Ca, kavak ve lâdin meşcereleri altında, çam meşcerelerine oranla çok daha az miktardadır. Ağaç türlerinin üzerinde yetiştiği toprak özellikleri bakımından, 36 cm'lik toprak derinliğinden daha aşağıda önemli bir farklılık belirlenmemiştir. Ağaçların toprak üstü kısımlarının tamamen hasat edilmesi sonucu, yalnızca gövdelerin çıkarılmasına oranla yetişme ortamından üç katına kadar daha fazla besin maddesi götürülmüş olacaktır.
