In this paper, results of the research project, entitled "Determining the Spatial and Structural changes in the Forest Areas around Istanbul using Remote Sensing Data and Generating Forest Information System", are presented. The project was financially supported by I.U Research Fund with the number of 636/210994.
The purpose of this study was to determine how forested, residential, and other land use forms have changed around Istanbul in a decade (from 1984 to 1994). Therefore, reliable ground truths and evaluations, which depend on them, are followed. Another purpose of the study was to reveal a methodology that inclines change detection analysis together with integration of GIS and Remote Sensing data. Prior to this study, a pilot (360 km2 area) was selected around Istanbul and topographic maps (1/25000), forest management maps (1/25000), and Landsat5-TM satellite data from 1984 to 1994 years were obtained.
In the project area, in order to evaluate and study the changes in the land use forms (water bodies, deciduous and Coniferous forest areas, and other non-forest areas) from 1984 to 1994, a monitoring system and the geographic database were generated. Obtained results were presented to form the maps, and graphics.

Bu makalede, "Uzaktan Algılama Verileriyle İstanbul Çevresi Ormanlarının Alansal ve Yapısal Değişikliklerinin Saptanması ve ORBİS 'in (Orman Bilgi Sistemi) Oluşturulması" adlı, İ.Ü. Araştırma Fonunca desteklenen "636/210994" no'lu çalışmada belirlenen sonuçlar sunulmuştur.
Bu çalışma ile, on yıllık bir periyot (1984 ve 1994 yılları arası) içersinde İstanbul çevresinde orman alanları, yerleşim ve diğer arazi kullanım şekillerinde nasıl bir değişim olduğunu saptamak amaçlanmıştır. Bu nedenle güvenilir yer gerçekleri ve bunlara dayalı değerlendirmeler izlenmiştir. Çalışmanın bir diğer amacı ise, GIS ve uzaktan algılama verilerinin entegrasyonu ile değişim analizine yönelik bir metodoloji ortaya koymaktır. Çalışmada öncelikle İstanbul çevresini temsil eden 360 km2 lik bir alan seçilmiş ve sonra bu alana ait gereksinim duyulan 1/25 000 ölçekli standart topografık haritalar, yine aynı ölçekli ve ormancılık çalışmalarının temel altlığını oluşturan Ame-najman haritaları ile 1984 ve 1994 yıllarına ait Landsat5-TM uydu verileri elde edilmiştir.
Proje alanının tamamında 1984 ve 1994 yılları arasındaki arazi kullanım biçimlerindeki (su alanları, yapraklı orman, ibreli orman, yerleşim ve diğer orman dışı açık alanlar) değişimlerin incelenmesi ve değerlendirilmesi amacıyla bir monitoring sistem (izleme ve yönlendirme) ve coğrafi veri tabanı oluşturulmuştur.
