Abstract (2. Language):
Mustafa Avkiran, the director of 5. Sokak Tiyatrosu (The 5th Street Theatre) which has
most often represented Turkish Theatre in the international theatre milieu and which has been
the subject of discussions for the productions which have drawn much attention keeps his
search experiencing the various tendencies of the contemporary drama trying to create a
language of his own. Avkiran enjoys telling the story by breaking and transforming the
traditional way of doing it, however; and his search improves within this frame. The objective
of this paper is to attempt to read-- through the chronological history and references of the
group-- the main problematique of 5.Sokak Tiyatrosu, stating that they have always preferred
their productions “to consider the problems on this land as their main concern” and the way
they related the opportunities of the contemporary drama to the agenda in the light of the
productions they have performed since their first production.
