Abstract (2. Language):
Women playwrights were successful in writing and staging plays during the 1800s in
USA. Mary Otis Warren and Anna Cora Mowatt were the two well known dramatists
of the period. Anna Cora Mowatt’s play Fashion (Life in New York, 184 ) which
celebrated American democracy, equality and simplicity became extremely popular
during mid-century. In the play, Mrs. Tiffany, the parvenu lady of New York City,
faces the provincial farmer Adam Trueman. Within the plot of a comedy of manners,
the true American Adam, Trueman teaches Mrs. Tiffany to adapt and extol American
ways. After all, traditional and European forms of privilege and elitism were under
strong attack during the era. This paper analyzes the dramatic/thematic structure of
Fashion and discusses how it purveys the democratic and republican ideology during
its time, blending the theme of European-American contrast at the same time.
