Abstract (2. Language):
During World War I, as a result of the alliance between Turkey and Germany, twenty scholars were invited from Germany to teach at the faculties of Arts, Sciences, Law and Theology of the Istanbul Darülfünun (University). These scholars signed 5 year term contracts with the Turkish government and started to teach in the academic year 1915-1916. However, they left Turkey as soon as the war ended before their terms of contract ended. This paper aims to study the scientific activities of Walther Penck who was entrusted with the teaching of geology and mineralogy in the Faculty of Science where he founded the Institute of Geology (Arziyat Darülmesaisi). In the institute located within the Abdülkerim Pasha Mansion, he created a library with books he provided from Europe and put together a collection of materials he gathered during his field studies and excursions in Turkey. The present paper also introduces his publications in which he contributed to the tectonics of Asia Minor and the geological formation of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles.
