DETERMINATION OF EARTHQUAKE SOURCE PARAMETERS OF PRINCE ISLANDS FAULT USING SIMULTANEOUS AND INDIVIDUAL INVERSION TECHNIQUES

In this study we analyzed the aftershocks of the 1999 Izmit earthquake that took place along the 40-km-long Prince’s island segment of the North Anatolian Fault which is the nearest trace of the fault to the city of Istanbul. The seismic moment magnitudes of these events range between 3.1 ≤ Mw ≤ 5.2 and the focal mechanism solutions are available. We compiled the waveforms of the broadband stations running in the region, rotated them to obtain the radial and transversal components, and corrected for the radiation pattern and geometrical spreading effects. We estimated the source parameters (seismic moment, Mo; corner frequency, fc) using the simultaneous inversion technique (NetMoment) developed by Hutchings (2004) that use the S-phases of the events recorded by local seismic networks. This method can also be used to derive the source parameters of earthquakes recorded at single station. The resulting parameters are estimated from the best fitting theoretical spectrum which is obtained through non-linear least square fitting of the observed S-wave displacement spectrum to the Brune omega squared (w2) source displacement spectrum (Brune, 1970).

Bu çalışmada, 1999 depremlerinin ardından Prens Adaları fayı olarak bilinen Kuzey Anadolu Fay Zonunun İstanbul’a en yakın olarak geçtiği yaklaşık 40 km uzunluğundaki fay segmenti üzerinde meydana gelmiş, sismik moment büyüklüğü (3.1 ≤ M ≤ 5.2) arasında değişen artçı depremlerden fay düzlemi çözümleri mevcut olanların, geniş bant istasyon kayıtları derlenmiş ve radial ile transversal bileşenlerine ayrılarak geometrik saçılma ve yayınım yolu (radiation pattern) etkileri giderilmiştir. Hutchings (2004) tarafından geliştirilen, yerel ağlarla kaydedilmiş depremlerin S fazlarını kullanan eş zamanlı (simulatane) ters çözüm yöntemi (NetMoment, Hutchings, 2004) ile depremlerin kaynak parametreleri (Moment, Mo, Kesme Frekansı, fc) belirlenmiştir. Bu yöntem aynı zamanda tek bir istasyonda kaydedilmiş depremlerin kaynak parametrelerinin hesaplanmasına olanak sağlamaktadır. Bu amaçla kaydedilmiş depremlerin düzeltilmiş S dalgası yerdeğiştirme spektrumu, Brune omega kare (w2) kaynak yer değiştirme spektrumuna (Brune, 1970) doğrusal olmayan en küçük kareler yöntemi kullanılarak eşleştirilmiş ve en iyi uyumu veren teorik spektrum belirlenerek çözüm parametreleri elde edilmiştir.
