Abstract (2. Language):
Number sense refers to having a good understanding of numbers and operations along with the ability and being able to handle mathematical situations flexibly. This is used for developing practic, flexible and efficient stratigies (including mental calculation and estimation) handling at solving mathematical problems. Thus students do not have to rely on rule based methods, standart written algorithms and paper-pencil when solving mathematical problems. In the literature there is no exactly the same definition of number sense. Studies showed that there are some difficulties in determining students’ number sense just because it is not so easy to define the concept of number sense precisely. Therefore, researchers used different classifications of the componets of number sense in order to determine the students’ level of number sense. This caused having many different classifications of the components of number sense in the literature. The aim of this study is to examine the different components of number sense in the literature and to exhibit a framework to better understand the concept. First, different classifications of the components of number sense are studied by a through literature review. These different classifications are compared with the most comprehensive one in the literature to identify the components and their refering skills and also to discover the similarities and differences among the classifications. As a result of this study, it is established that a component covering the same skills is called by different names and also two different components are placed as one in another classification. Moreover, it is discovered that a component that is used to identify the existence of number sense has been used to identify another component in a different classification.
