Abstract (2. Language):
Heavy metal pollution continues to subject the ecosystem to increasing amounts of environmental stress and constitutes a health hazard for a large variety of species. Taking into consideration the scale of the potential threat posed by those pollutants, it is vital to gain a greater understanding of their impact on the environment. The use of bioindicator species is one of the most precise and accurate methods available for the study of heavy metal pollution and its effects. Prior studies indicate that crayfish are capable of accumulating heavy metals with rates dependent on the external concentration of the metal in question. As such, crayfish have long been in use as bioindicator species, and it is the purpose of this review to investigate the success of this taxon as bioindicators.
