Abstract (2. Language):
The journal of Molla Nasraddin plays a significant role in press history of Azerbaijan and the Muslim East. This journal was not a sheer publication, but it put the foundation of the whole progressive social-literary division. Being characterized as realism for its significance, this independent and original division was called Mollanasraddinism and had great repercussion in the whole Muslim East in the first quarter of the XX century. It is no mere chance that from the very first days of its publication (1906) the journal drew attention of intelligentsia and scholars of the period. Such outstanding representatives of Azerbaijani intelligentsia and journalism as A. Huseynzade, U. Hajibayov, F. Kocharli and many others spoke of the objectives, style, and the language of the journal positively.
Fundamental studies of Molla Nasraddin began during the Soviet period. Both the literary activity of Jalil Mammadquluzade (editor of the journal) and the publication history of the journal were among the most studied themes in Azerbaijani literary studies. According to the bibliography published in honor of Jalil Mammadguluzade’s 100th anniversary, by 1966 more than 1000 books and articles were devoted to this theme in Azerbaijan.
It is noted that in the first decades of its research in Azerbaijani literary criticism, the publication history of Molla Nasraddin was not studied independently. It was studied as a constituent part of Jalil Mammadquluzade’s literary activity. And the journal was mostly considered from Jalil Mammadquluzade’s social-political, atheist and literary views but not from the perspective of its role in the Azerbaijani social thought and history of press. In 1920s, the supporters of so-called “proletarian culturalism” and “vulgar socialism” trends in Azerbaijan, perverting the universal values, accepted only the proletarian culture. Accordingly, Jalil Mammadquluzade’s literary activity was analyzed from two aspects: On the one hand, he was considered and accepted “as a friend of workers and peasants”, on the other hand, his pre-revolution works, especially his plays were criticized unjustly and groundlessly.
Having analyzed Soviet period study of Molla Nasraddin, authors of the article, Hamlet Isaxanli and Solmaz Tohidi-Rustamova assert that although Molla Nasraddin has been studied for 70 years during the Soviet period, it has not been explored in detail and objectively because of the Soviet ideology. That is why there is a great need to study Molla Nasraddin comprehensively and objectively, taking into consideration all historical factors.
