Students of the premier-middle school use the language as a tool at the stage of knowledge's getting, understanding, interpreting and transferring. Language as a tool enables the individuals to learn the knowledge through their skills (listening and reading) of understanding what they have been told by verbal or written and also enables the individuals to transfer their knowledge in a correctly and tangible way. The basic language skills which are the main element of language teaching also have an important place in science and technology lessons. In this study, it has been aimed to identify the basic language skills of science and technology teachers and to assign how much and in what ways they use these skills. In accordance with this purpose, the questionnaires which consist of 30 items were applied to 68 teachers who work in the schools, located in Istanbul. The data which were obtained through the survey has been evaluated by both qualitative and quantitative methods. The obtained findings are important in terms of ascertaining the science teachers' level of using the basic language skills and using in science and technology lessons of different kinds technical and method within these skills.

İlköğretim öğrencileri bilgiyi edinme, anlama, yorumlama ve aktarma aşamasında dili bir araç olarak kullanırlar. Dil bir araç olarak hem bireylerin yazılı ya da sözlü anlatılanları anlayabilme becerileriyle bilgiyi öğrenmelerine (dinleme, okuma) hem de bilgilerini doğru ve anlaşılabilir bir biçimde anlatabilme becerileriyle öğrendiklerini aktarabilmelerine (konuşma, yazma) imkan tanır. Dil öğretiminin ana unsuru olan temel dil becerileri, aynı zamanda fen ve teknoloji derslerinde de önemli bir yere sahiptir. Bu çalışmada dilin fendeki öneminden yola çıkarak fen bilgisi öğretmenlerinin sahip oldukları temel dil becerileri ve bu becerileri derslerinde ne kadar ve nasıl kullandıklarını tespit etmek amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda İstanbul ilinde bulunan okullarda görev yapan 68 fen öğretmenine 30 sorudan oluşan bir ölçme aracı uygulanmıştır. Ölçme aracından elde edilen veriler hem nitel hem de nicel olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Ulaşılan bulgular, fen öğretmenleri tarafından temel dil becerilerinin kullanım düzeyini ve bu becerileri içerisinde barındıran çeşitli yöntem ve tekniklerin fen ve teknoloji derslerinde kullanımını tespit etmek açısından önemlidir.
