Abstract (2. Language):
Garden art, of formal lines from its beginnings, reached a stage when during the baroque styles, its products were known as
"architectural gardens".
Formal style having been explored to the full, informal style was then turned
to. In this style of gardening, England took the lead. Gardens were now so
enlarged that, their design came to be known as "landscape gardening".
Informal - romantic picturesque - poetic gardens were the negation of the
architectural gardens, once so perfected by the classically inclined Italian nature.
Eventually a balance was reached between the two extremes, perhaps best
manifest in the joint works of Jeckyll and Lutyens. Nevertheless what is implied
by Jardin d'Anglais is the English landscapes of the eigteenth century, that were
nature rebuilt to appear more natural.
