Abstract (2. Language):
For the past decades, studies about students' understanding have been very popular in Turkey. In these studies multiple choice tests have been frequently used by the researchers in order to identify students' conception. These instruments have some disadvantages for example; do not contain an important part in which students' explanations included. Two-tier diagnostic tests, derived from multiple choices tests, cover some of these disadvantages with its second tiers which require a reason for the multiple choices test. Since this type of tests supply in-depth data about origins of students' misconceptions, it has commonly used in the literature. The aim of this study is to reveal the development stages and analysis process of two-tier tests. To reach this aim, it was tried to give necessary information about where the two-tier tests were used, how the tests were developed, and how the data from the test items were analyzed. In addition, a few examples of two-tier test items about science concepts were presented in this study.
