Abstract (2. Language):
The main purpose of this study is to emphasize the importance of the modelling the geographic data to be used in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) which have a very wide range of applications today and to provide general information on the benefits of Geography Markup Language (GML). The Geography Markup Language (GML) is an XML encoding for the transport and storage of geographic information, including both the geometry and properties of geographic features. This paper defines the mechanisms and syntax that GML use to encode geographic information in XML. It is anticipated that GML will make a significant impact on the ability of organizations to share geographic information with one another, and to enable linked geographic datasets.

GML'in yakın bir gelecekte Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemlerinde (CBS) çok yaygın olarak kullanılacağına inanılmaktadır. GML, coğrafi verilerin sistemler arası aktarılması işlemleri için geliştirilen bir XML "dialect"dir. Coğrafi veriler belirli bir arazi detayını gösterecek şekilde aktarılabilmekte, daha sonrasında harita üzerinde nasıl gösterileceği kontrol edilebilmektedir. En önemli avantaj ise, haritaların kullanıcı tarafında satın alınması gereken özel bir yazılıma ihtiyaç duyulmadan, standart bir İnternet gezgini tarafından gösterilebilmesidir. Bu, klasik resim tabanlı metodlara nispeten daha çok yönlü ve yetenekli bir yaklaşımdır. Bu çalışmada, GML ve onun CBS ile olan ilişkisinin sunulması amaçlanmıştır.
