Abstract (2. Language):
This article examines the crime trends reported in Turkey during 1984 to 2003. To this end it uses descriptive and inferential statistical analysis techniques in relation to police performance. Statistics prove that crimes are rapidly increasing in Turkey. In contrast, police performance seems to have degraded despite their increased number. As a result, it is suggested that Turkish police should change its working practices and organisational structure in order to improve their performance in dealing with crime. Otherwise, this situation may damage police public image irreconcilably.
