Abstract (2. Language):
Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency of positive radiographic findings in panoramic radiographs of edentulous . Material and Methods: For this study panoramic radiographs of 106 edentulous patients over the age of 60 attending to the Suleyman Demirel University Faculty of Dentistry, Oral Diagnosis and Radiology Department with variable complaints were analyzed. The radiographs were evaluated for the important radiographic findings such as retained root fragments, impacted teeth, radiolucencies associated with cysts, foreign bodies, mental foramen in the vicinity of the crest of the ridge, maxillary sinus pathologies, soft tissue calcifications. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: The most frequent finding was mental foramen situated close to the crest of the residual ridge. In 51 patients, the mental foramen was situated at the top of the residual ridge. Of these patients, 38 had a bilateral mental foramen close to the crest of the ridge. Twenty-seven subjects had 31 submucosal or intrabony root remains, and 20 of them were located in the maxilla. Conclusions: Routine panoramic examination of the jaws is necessary to detect impacted teeth, retained root fragments, and other radiographic findings that may require treatment before construction of complete dentures.
