Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease that has a high morbidity-mortality rate and requires expensive treatment. The general clinical diagnosis of this disease is the easy formation of fractures with little trauma in bones due to a reduction in bone mineral density. The earliest suggestion of an association between osteoporosis and oral bone loss was made in 1960. If the rate of bone loss in the jaws can be shown to have a high degree of asso¬ciation with the rate of bone loss in the other bones of the body, and if sufficiently sensitive and spesific meth¬ods can be developed for routine clinical measurement of bone loss rate in the jaws, dentomaxillofacial radi¬ology could become very important in the early diagnosis of patients with osteoporosis.

Osteoporoz; kemik mineral yoğunluğunun azalması nedeniyle, klinik olarak genellikle küçük travmalarla kemiklerde kolayca kırık oluşması ile tanı konabilen, morbidite-mortalitesi yüksek, tedavisi pahalı olan bir metabolik kemik hastalığıdır. Osteoporoz ve oral kemik kaybı arasındaki ilişki ilk olarak 1960'larda gösterilmiştir. Eğer çenelerdeki kemik kaybının vücudun diğer kemiklerindeki kemik kaybıyla yüksek derecede ilişkisi olduğu gösterilebilirse ve çenelerdeki kemik kaybı hızını rutin klinik ölçümleri için yeteri kadar hassas ve spesifik metotlar geliştirebilirse dentomaksillofasyal radyoloji osteoporozlu hastaların erken teşhisinde çok önemli hale gelebilir.
