This article aims at examining the prohibition of alcohol and prostition, practiced by Selim III to prevent the degeneration in the society.

III. Selim, Rusya ve Avusturya ile savaşların cereyan ettiği 1789 yılında Osmanlı tahtına çıkmıştır. Bu dönem, uzun yıllar süren savaşların, devlet ve toplum hayatında oluşturduğu bazı zafiyetlerin ortaya çıktığı zamanlardır. Bu makalede, savaşlar devam ederken göreve gelen III. Selim'in toplumda gördüğü bu bozulmanın önüne geçmek için İstanbul'da uygulamaya çalıştığı içki ve fuhuş yasağı incelenmektedir.
