The pomegranate, Punica granatum L., an ancient, mystical, and highly distinctive fruit, is the predominant member of two species comprising the Punicaceae family. The pomegranate has been widely consumed in many different cultures for thousands of years, largely without incidents, and thus is considered generally safe by the general public. The pomegranate tree, Punica granatum, especially its fruit, possesses a vast ethnomedical history and represents a phy-tochemical reservoir of heuristic medicinal value. The tree/fruit can be divided into several anatomical compartments: seed, juice, peel, leaf, flower, bark, and roots, each of which has interesting pharma-cologic activity. Juice and peels, for example, possess potent antiox-idant properties, while juice, peel and oil are all weakly estrogenic. However, the use of juice, peel and oil have also been shown to pos¬sess anticancer activities, including interference with tumor cell pro¬liferation, cell cycle, invasion and angiogenesis. In the human and animal studies, pomegranate has been shown to exert significant antiatherogenic, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammato¬ry effects. It is possible to use pomegranate in the prevention of can¬cer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and ultraviolet radiation-induced skin damage. Increasing body of evidence has underscored the cancer preventive efficacy of pomegranate both in vitro and in vivo animal models. Currently, numerous clinical trials are in progress exploring the therapeutic potential of pomegranate extracts.

Punicaceae ailesinin önemli bir üyesi olan nar; (Punica granatum) antik dönemden beri tanınan, mistik özelliklere sahip, diğerlerinden oldukça farklı bir meyvedir. Nar, binlerce yıldır farklı kültürler tarafından oldukça yaygın olarak kullanılan, herhangi bir ciddi yan etkisi olmayan ve toplum tarafında oldukça güvenli kabul edilen bir bitkidir. Nar ağacı özellikle de meyvesi halk hekimliğinde yeri olan, medikal değeri keşfedilmesi gereken bir fitokimyasal kaynaktır. Nar ağacı ve meyvesi, değişik ilgi çekici farmakolojik etkilere sahip anatomik bölümlerden oluşur; çekirdek, nar suyu, kabuk, yaprak, çiçek, ağaç kabuğu ve kök. Nar suyu ve meyve kabuğu güçlü antioksidan etki gösterir, nar suyu, kabuğu ve yağı zayıf ös-trejenik etkilidir. Nar suyu, kabuğu ve yağının tümör hücre çoğal¬ması, döngüsü, invazyonu ve anjiogenez ile etkileşerek antikanser aktivite gösterdiği kanıtlanmıştır. insan ve hayvan çalışmaları, na¬rın antiaterojenik, antioksidan, antikanserojenik ve antiinflamatu-var etkilerini göstermiştir. Kanser, kardiyovasküler hastalıklar, di¬yabet ve ultraviyolenin zararlı etkilerinden koruyucu olarak kulla¬nılabilme potansiyeli vardır. in vitro ve in vivo hayvan modellerin¬de artan sayıda deney, narın, kanser tedavisinde etkili olduğunu kanıtlamaktadır. Günümüzde, nar ekstrelerinin terapötik kullanımlarıyla ilişkili birçok çalışma sürdürülmektedir.
