Abstract (2. Language):
Objective: Our study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of patients' relatives who spent the night in front of the emergency department and around hospital and to determine disturbances and their demands regarding this experience. Methods: Sixty-three families who spent the night in front of the emergency department and around hospital at Gaziantep University School of Medicine for their hospitalized patients were included in the study between June 2010 and February 2011. A pre-prepared questionnaire in accordance with the purposes of the study was applied face to face to one member of each fami¬ly. The results were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 63 patient's relatives mostly self-employed were included in the study. They were mainly from the city of Gaziantep. The longest duration of stay was 360 days. The mean number of men and women spending the night per patient was 2.4 and 1.4, respectively. The majority of the participations waited for their fathers and all day long. Generally, hospital canteen was preferred for feeding. Majority of the participations slept in the open on the benches and concrete ground. Their main complaint was that they had to spend the night outside. Of the participations, 34.9% got sick while sleeping outside at night, and 31.7% spent night at least once before for an other patient. Their requests can be alined as clean water supply, hygenic toilet and bathroom respectively. Conclusion: The relatives of the patients spending the night in front of the emergency department and around hospital present a variety of demographic characteristics reflecting the socio-cul-tural structure of the society. Hospitals should also provide accom¬modation facilities for the patients' relatives accompanying them as well as health services for patients.
