Neonatal sepsis is still an important, life threatening condition for neonates. The result of a study of 2420 cases treated bet¬ween the years 1993-1997 in Pediatric Clinics of Kartal Educational Research Hospital showed that, the incidence of neona¬tal sepsis was 10.2 %. The mortality rates of births at home were found to be higher than births at hospital. When we examined the risk factors in neonates with sepsis, we found that, prematurity was the most important risk factor. The incidence of early-onset sepsis was found to be 68 % and late-onset sep¬sis was found 32%. We observed that the immature/total ne-utrophil ratio (I/T) and the C-reactive protein (CRP) methods in neonatal sepsis, especially CRP, were esaful for diagnosis but especially for evaluating the success of the treatment. When we looked at the culture results, the best method for diagnosis and to manage the treatment, culture positivity ra¬tios were found to be 21.05 % and the blood culture was the most valuable. Klebsiella pneumoniae was the most common pathogen (26%). The mortality rate for the first 24 hours was found to be 32.6%.

Neonatal sepsis yenidoğanlann yaşamını tehdit etmesi açısından günümüzde hala önemini korumaktadır. 1993-1997 yılları arasında takip edilen 2420 hasta dosyasının taranması sonucu Kartal Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Kliniği'nde neonatal sepsisin görülme sıklığı %10.2 bulun¬du. Evde yapılan doğumlarda mortalite oranı hastanede do¬ğumlara göre daha yüksekti. Sepsisli yenidoğanlarda prematü-rite en önemli risk faktörü olarak belirlendi. Erken neonatal sepsis insidansı %68, geç neonatal görülme insidansı %32 bulundu. immatür/total nötrofil oranı (I/T) ve C-Reaktif protein (CRP) gibi laboratuvar tetkiklerinin, sepsiste tanı koymada ve özellik¬le CRP'nın tedavi takibinde yardımcı olduğu gözlemlendi. Ne¬onatal sepsiste tanı koydurucu ve tedaviyi yönlendirici bir yön¬tem olan kültürde üreme oranı %21.05 idi. Kültürler arasında da kan kültürü birinci sıradaydı. Kültürde üreyen etken patojenlerin içinde en sık görüleni %26 oranı ile Klebsiella pneumoniae oldu. ilk 24 saat içindeki mortalite %32.6 olarak saptandı.
