Objective: Depression is an important health problem with a reported prevalence of 10-20% for Turkey. Current guidelines suggest the implementation of screening tools in general prac¬tice. Beck Depression Inventory for Primary Care (BDI-PC) is an internationally accepted tool used for this purpose. This study aims to adapt the Beck Depression Inventory for Primary Care developed by Beck et al. into Turkish. Materials and Methods: The BDI-PC was translated into Turkish and tested in a population of 20 primary care patients. The inven¬tory was modified according to these initial findings and reapplied to 49 consecutive patients at a primary care health center. It was recognized that with the removal of the "loss of interest" item the Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient increased from 0.69 to 0.75. Hence, this item was reevaluated and changed in order to make it more understandable for Turkish patients. The modified instru¬ment was again applied to 50 consecutive patients at a primary care health center. Results: The mean age of the participants was 38 ± 13 years with 18 males and 32 females. The internal reliability coefficient Cronbach alpha, Spearman-Brown coefficient and Guttman Split-Half of the Turkish BDI-PC were calculated as 0.85, 0.86, and 0.82 respectively. The median (25-75th percentile) BDI-PC scores of the participants for the total sample and for those with a diagnosis of depression according to the DSM-IV criteria was 3 (1-7) and 11 (7¬13) respectively. The median time for completing the question¬naire was 7 minutes. Conclusion: The Turkish version of BDI-PC (BDÖ-BB) proved to be a reliable instrument necessitating relatively less time for comple¬tion. We suggest the application of the BDÖ-BB to Turkish pri¬mary care patients for screening depression.

Amaç: Türkiye'deki yaygınlığı %10-20 arasında olduğu bildirilen depresyon, önemli bir sağlık sorunudur. Tanı ve tedavi rehberleri birinci basamakta depresyona yönelik tarama testlerinin kullanılmasını önermektedir. Beck Depression Inventory for Primary Care (Birinci Basamak için Beck Depresyon Ölçeği) (BDÖ-BB) bu amaçla kullanılan uluslararası kabul görmüş bir ölçektir. Bu çalışmanın amacı Beck ve arkadaşları tarafından geliştirilen BDÖ-BB'yi Türk¬çe'ye uyarlamaktır. Yöntem: BDÖ-BB Türkçe'ye çevrildi ve 20 birinci basamak hastasında denendi. Bu ilk bulgulardan sonra ölçekte değişiklikler yapıldı ve aile hekimliği polikliniğine başvuran 49 ardışık hastaya uygulandı. "ilgi kaybı" maddesinin kaldırılmasıyla Cronbach alfa katsayısının 0.69'dan 0.75'e yükseldiğinin saptanması üzerine bu madde tekrar değerlendirildi ve Türk toplumu için daha anlaşılabilir olacak şekilde değiştirildi. Değiştirilmiş ölçek tekrar aile hekimliği polikliniğine başvuran 50 ardışık hastaya uygulandı. Bulgular: Katılımcıların ortalama yaşı 38 (%95 güven aralığı 42.5 - 62.5) idi. 18'i erkek, 32'si kadındı. Ölçeğin Cronbach alfa iç güvenilirlik katsayısı, Spearman-Brown katsayısı ve Guttman Split-Half katsayısı sırasıyla 0.85, 0.86 ve 0.82 olarak hesaplandı. Bütün katılımcıların ve DSM-IV ölçütlerine göre depresyon tanısı alanların ortanca (%25 - %75 persantil) BDÖ-BB puanı sırasıyla 3 (1-7) ve 11 (7-13) idi. Ölçeği doldurmak için gereken medyan süre 7 dakika olarak hesaplandı. Sonuç: Türkçe BDÖ-BB'nin, kısa sürede uygulanabilen güvenilir bir ölçek olduğu saptandı. BDÖ-BB'nin Türkiye'de birinci basamak hastalarının depresyon açısından taranmasında kullanılmasını öne¬riyoruz.
